Glendon on the River is an equestrian community located along the Deep River in Moore County, North Carolina. This unique community offers miles of horse/walking/riding trails, access to the Deep River and acres of protected community forest.

Deep River

The Deep River forms the southern boundary of the community for 1.5 miles. Between the river and the deep riverthe home sites lies 150 acres of protected hardwood bottomland which you can explore on horseback or afoot on 10 miles of trails. A canoe access (coming spring 2010) will feature an access to the river for launching canoes and kayaks, a picnic area with tables, deck and grilling area. The river not only offers peacefulness and beauty, but also fishing, canoeing and kayaking. The newly created Deep River Trail opens in new windowwill provide addition river access points.

The Deep River is filled with history starting with Native Americans who fished, lived and hunted along the river. Eventually Europeans settled in the river valley and built sawmills and gristmills along the river. Evidence of this era can be found in the conservation land where an old bridge abutment still stands at a former mill site. Some of the main uses of the river are recreation, fishing, and paddling. The plant and animal communities found along the banks of the river have been preserved by conservation easements on thousands of acres.

The Deep River contains a variety of plant and animal life. The river is home to otters, eagles, bass and pan fish, bobcats, and deer. The banks of the river are lined with vast hardwood stands containing oak, ash, walnut, maples and sycamore.

 

Riding Trails

10 miles of riding/walking/mountain biking trails are located in the bottomland of the Deep River. Each home site has access tomiles of riding trails these trails. The trail system is private and only open to the homeowners of Glendon on the River. The trails can be used for horseback riding, walking and mountain biking. The network of trails starts in the gentle hills near Rascob Road and eventually travel to the bottomland of the Deep River. Interspersed throughout the trails are small clearings that can be used for camping, a picnic or just to take a break. The trail system is also connected with the canoe launch.

 

Community Land

Adding to the enjoyment of the river and trail network is 150 acres of protected community land. This land is private and is only available for use of homeowners of Glendon on the River. The land is protected from development by a conservation easement. The intent of the easement is to protect the water quality of the Deep River, prohibit future development and insure that the plant and animal ecosystems remain intact. Lots 1, 5 and 6 adjoin the conservation land. Homeowners can use this land for horseback riding (on existing trails), hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing. The land is covered with a stand of mature hardwoods comprised of red and white oak, red and sugar maple, black walnut, ash, poplar, sycamore and an occasional pine. Some of these trees are larger than 30 inches in diameter.

 

Septic System

Each lot in Glendon on the River has been engineered with an environmental friendly septic system by Aqwa opens in new window. The Advantex Treatment System use an environmentally friendly filtering system that produces waste water clean enough to be used for drip or subsurface irrigation. Unlike a tradition septic system, the Advantex system release small amounts of treated waste water throughout the day which is better for the environment.
